Neuse River Senior Games & Silver Arts were held this year from Monday, April 24- Wednesday, May 4.
Senior Games are an annual Athletic and Arts Competition for ages 50 and older. This year there were 271 participants from six counties, including Craven. I sent a request to female canvas responses and discovered that Fairfield Harbor participants were at least 26 in number and competed in various activities.
There were 20 participants in pickleball, and they brought home 27 medals. Included in that number were Paul Fenn and Ellen McElree, who won Gold in mixed doubles;
John Rothengast and David Santiago won Silver in men’s doubles; Evan Lerman won Gold in Singles, Doubles, and Mixed.
There were three participants in tennis; Susanne Pendelton and Pam Kovacs brought home two silver medals; Doreen Hyatt placed Gold in women's doubles.
Bob Bendy placed in bowling and won Gold and Silver in previous years and Sharon Henke placed in golf.
Everyone who placed Gold or Silver can advance to a State Level competition in Raleigh in September-October. If they place in the State competition, they qualify to compete in the National competition, held every other year in different parts of the country.
Senior Games are a fantastic opportunity to stay involved in competitive athletics and arts in your senior years. If you want to be added to their mailing list or volunteer for their events, please call Kendall at 252-636-6606 for further information.
Stay involved! At a National event for tennis a few years back, a 100+ year-old tennis player
was on the stage.
