Hospital Auxiliary Update

Happy Valentine’s Day to Everyone in the Harbour!

I hope everyone has stayed warm during the cold spells we had in January, but frigid

weather makes a perfect setting for cozy indoor activities like knitting, crocheting, and

sewing. Our volunteers are once again busily doing just that by making beautiful afghans,

lap robes, shawls, eyeglass cases, baby blankets, hand-knit beanies, and fun stuffed animals

for our younger patients at Carolina East. I have added some pictures below of our

volunteers with their creations during our last meeting. Please enjoy!

As I have mentioned frequently in the FH Hospital Auxiliary articles, Lucille Durst leads

our campaign for making baby blanket/beanie sets for newborns during the month of

December. Lucille shared with the volunteers that she had noticed the nurses going

through the blankets that she had given to the hospital and that they were gathering up

the ones that had a rainbow pattern. She asked why, and the nurses explained that the

rainbow baby blankets are given to mothers who have lost a baby in the past and then

given birth to a healthy infant. The term Rainbow Baby refers to a beautiful rainbow that

appears after a terrible storm. In other words, a Rainbow Baby is a precious gift to their

parents after they suffered a devastating storm of loss from their last pregnancy. It can

come in many forms such as miscarriage, stillbirth, or other forms of infant loss. When

Lucille learned this was an important tradition, she researched finding the soft flannel

material that we use to make these blankets. Devine intervention was with her that day, as

she found bolts of rainbow flannel on sale at a remarkably low price! Because Lucille

asked about this, our Auxiliary has found another way that we can support the hospital by

making more of these special blankets for the Women’s Pavillion all year long. I have

included a picture of Lucille holding an example of one of the blankets.

The Hospital Auxiliary will hold a Friendship Gathering at the Community Center on

February 26 th starting at 6 pm. We will serve wine, cheese, and desserts for our volunteers

and anyone in the Harbour who would like to join us is welcome. Several volunteers bring

a friend who might be interested in joining our organization. You do not need to sew, knit,

or crochet, but if you’d like to learn we offer a Stitch and Chat class on the second Friday

of the month from 1:30 to 3 pm in Room 2 of the Activity Building. We hope that many of

you can come and join us!

The FH Hospital Auxiliary meets on the third Monday of most every month, at the

Community Center from 9:30 to 10:30. The auxiliary does not hold meetings during the

summer months of July and August. It’s a great way to meet new friends and become

involved in our community in helping Carolina East Medical Center. Please join us and

see what we’re all about. Membership is free and for more information you may contact

our Chairperson, Holly Woodcock or Pat Geres, Membership Chair.
