Pet of the Month: Bowie

There were no new pet submissions for this month so I'm taking some editor's privilege here by featuring my dog, Bowie, for December. Bowie is a 5-year-old hound mix that we got from a shelter when he was around 4 months old. If you ever see him on a walk with me and I'm holding him back, it's not because he's mean. He's a teddy bear! But he WILL try to love you to death. And his favorite way to show his love is by jumping up on you. But he really is a sweetheart.

How did Bowie come to live with us?

After losing our shepherd mix, Rosie, to a car accident in April of 2020 we felt it hard be without a big dog in our home (we were living in Greenville at the time). We started searching shelters online but had a difficult time as many people were searching for dogs during the pandemic.

We finally went to a Durham shelter with some dogs in mind that we had found on their site, but by the time we got there the dogs we wanted to meet were already spoken for. We had intended to get an adult dog but all that was left were puppies. Bowie (called Cape Fear at the time) bonded with me immediately. So, even though my husband said "no puppies" when I left Greenville for Durham, I came home with one anyway! He was about 4 months old at the time. He was a little scared on the long drive home, but he had me and several of my kids there to comfort him.

What led us to choose Bowie for a name?

We got input from all five of our kids. I finally settled on Bowie. It seemed to fit him.

I have a ton of nicknames for him: Buddy, Bubba, Bo Diddly, Bocephus, Beauregard, to name a few. He answers to all of them.

Here's a recent funny story about Bowie:

One day while I was helping my teenage son pick which study pathway he wanted to follow in high school, Bowie came up to me sniffing, sniffing, sniffing as hound dogs tend to do.

Finally I said, "Fine, Bowie, which pathway do you think he should pick?!!?" Bowie then proceed to pick, with his nose, the veterinarian pathway! My son and I had a good laugh about that one.

What funny quirks does Bowie have?

Bowie follows me everywhere. I'm sure he's hoping that I'll get him a Greenie or let him lick a bowl or something. But he's afraid of silverware. Yes, silverware.

He can do quite a few tricks like sit, shake hands, high-five, spin, speak, and beg.

What are Bowie's favorite things?

He loves playing tug with large rope toys. He loves soft toys but destroys them in just a few minutes. He loves going for walks and tolerates the Gentle Leader I use to walk him (he's almost 70 pounds and he pulls like crazy!). He loves to cuddle on the couch and puts all his weight on you; he thinks he's a lap dog. And he loves when people visit our house.

Thanks for letting me share Bowie with Fairfield Harbour!
